Abstract

The aim was to evaluate changes in aerobic physical activity (PA) in Madrid during home confinement by COVID-19, as a function of sociodemographic variables. An online survey of 225 people, aged 20-34 years, living in the Sol neighbourhood of Madrid was conducted. Data analysis took into account adherence to PA recommendations before and after confinement. During confinement, gender was associated with the amount of PA performed (β = 0.42, 95% CI [0.17 to 0.99]; p=0.049). Also, PA practiced before confinement, was significant as a function of educational level and place of practice x2(1) = 4.18; p=0.04; x2(3) = 52.76; p<0.001, respectively). In addition, the barriers to access to practice were different according to the number of people living together and the place of practice during confinement (x2(104) = 161.84; p<0.001; x2(24) = 40.32; p=0.02, respectively). On the one hand, physically active individuals before confinement maintained PA levels during (β =0.23, 95% CI [0.10 to 0.51]; p<0.001). However, subjective perception of physical activity practice and the type of activity practiced during confinement were associated with higher levels of PA practiced during the confinement period (β =3.61, 95% CI [2.03 to 6.44]; p<0.001 and β = 0.49, 95% CI [0.35 to 0.70]; p<0.001, respectively). Prior to confinement, there were already differences in the variables of age, gender or educational level, in aerobic PA. With quarantine, these differences in aerobic PA levels were significantly exacerbated. PA decreased, especially in women and in people without university education, during confinement.
