Resumen

The Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald, McGhee, and Schwartz, 1998) provides a flexible measure of the automatic associations underlying implicit stereotypes and prejudice. The present study tested the implicit stereotypes about powerful and powerless individuals using the IAT. Some previous lines of research have shown that the content of these stereotypes may be systematic: powerful groups are usually perceived as competent but not sociable and the other hand, powerless groups are seen as incompetent but sociable. This study using the IAT supports this hypothesis for the automatic component of stereotypes of powerful and powerless individuals. The implications of our results for the importance of the attributive dimensions are discussed.
