Abstract

Trait anxiety and other emotional processes can be related to the perception of pain in injured athletes, which can hinder adherence behaviors to their rehabilitation program. This study has two objectives: to determine the relationship between trait anxiety and the perception of pain during the rehabilitation process in injured soccer players and to determine the relationship between the ruminative responses of injured soccer players and the perception of pain during the rehabilitation process. The sample consisted of 22 injured soccer players, with a mean age of 20.32±0.99, whose injuries were severe and moderate. The level of trait anxiety, the level of ruminative responses and the perception of pain were evaluated for 21 days during rehabilitation. The results showed that the group of gamers with high levels of trait anxiety manifested a significantly higher perception of pain than the group of gamers with low levels of trait anxiety, and that the group of gamers with high levels of rumination manifested a significantly greater perception of pain. greater than the group of players with low levels of rumination. The values obtained in the perception of pain decreased significantly over time, both in the high and low rumination groups and in the high and low anxiety groups. The group of injured soccer players with a high level of trait anxiety showed a pain perception of between 3 and 5 points more than the group with a low level of trait anxiety in the first 5 data collections. The group of injured soccer players with a high level of ruminative responses showed, in the first 5 data collections, pain perception values approximately 2 points higher than the group with a low level of ruminative responses.
