The cistern of the cloister of the Tarragona cathedral: a water collection, drainage system or ice well?

It is proposed that the cistern of the Cathedral of Tarragona may have functioned as an ice well, linked to the historical ice trade in the Camp de Tarragona region. Its geometric features and volumetry are consistent with this use, according to previous studies and historical documentation. The article analyzes this structure to determine its chronology and possible functions, seeking to resolve this typological uncertainty. Laser scanning and thermal analysis are key methods used to study this structure. Previous research has employed similar technologies to understand the function and energy efficiency of historic buildings.
The study includes laser scanning with a Trimble TX5 scanner to obtain geometric data, the use of infrared thermography to analyze thermal environmental conditions, and thermal modeling with Design Builder software, allowing the assessment of the cistern’s technical properties and the validation of hypotheses regarding its use.
