The end of late Roman Villae raises the problem of the location of elite residences. This paper focuses on written material from the Iberian Peninsula and underlines the importance of chronology and social differences within the aristocracies. This explains why some local aristocracies remained in their rural but poorer residences, while the higher elites resided in cities. These patterns were to be partially changed by the Islamic conquest.
