Es ya casi un tópico en la historiografia sobre el mundo andalusí, y más concretamente del Califato, la disfunción existente entre la relevancia de Madinat al-Zahra, en el contexto histórico del periodo califal, y el "desconocimiento" que de ella se tiene, traducido en muchas ocasiones, más de las deseables, en profundas distorsiones, no importa de qué signo, de su verdadero significado.
