¿Por qué y para qué nacen las órdenes militares? La respuesta debe ser necesariamente plural y compleja, pero si nos centramos en la realidad peninsular castellano-leonesa, y concretamente en las órdenes militares de origen hispánico, esa misma respuesta, simplificando mucho, puede ser precisada con más facilidad: las órdenes militares nacen porque las monarquías de la segunda mitad del siglo XII necesitan instrumentos capaces de consolidar sus reinos territorial y militarmente.
