Pierre Guichard con su obra Al-Andalus. Estructura antropológica de una sociedad islámica en occidente, publi- cada en 1976 es uno de los especialistas que más ha influido en la visión contemporánea de la historia de al- Andalus. Las interpretaciones “nacionalistas” de la época, escritas no sólo por españoles, postulaban la existencia de una especie de “islám español”, en base a una supues- tamente rápida “occidentalización” de árabes y beréberes, de forma que estos habrían sido absorbidos por los indígenas, y subsumidos en las esencias de una “nación española” cuasieterna, por lo que la invasión sólo habría supuesto un leve barniz cultural y religioso sin mayor trascendencia. Es decir, postulaban una plena “continuidad” histórica entre las sociedades romana ymedievales, todas las cuales serían básicamente semejantes, sin que la invasión islámica hubiese supuesto corte alguno.
