El emirato omeya es posiblemente la época de la historia de al-Andalus sobre la que nuestros conocimientos han experimentado unos cambios más amplios y profundos en la última década. No sólo por los nuevos datos –en gran parte arqueológicos– obtenidos, sino por la calidad de los mismos, y por los debates generados. Lo importante es que no se trata del conocimiento de nuevos hechos –aunque la recientísima “aparición” del Muqtabis 11.1 y su no menos rápida traducción sean un acontecimiento de a reseñar–, sino que lo relevante es que los principales avances se han producido en el terreno de las interpretaciones de los hechos ya conocidos, y de que en esta época como en pocas se está introduciendo la documentación arqueológica como elementos del debate histórico, jugando un papel de primera importancia.
