Las murallas islámicas de Almuñecar (Granada)

La población de Almuñécar se encuentra en el sector occidental de la costa granadina. Su emplazamiento físico viene definido por un grupo de tres colinas que se levantan frente al mar, rodeadas por dos llanuras de cierto desarrollo. De éstas, la situada a Levante está formada por los aportes sedimentarios del río Verde, mientras que la localizada a Poniente tiene su origen en el río Seco. Estas llanuras se han generado a partir de sendas bahías marinas, de manera que hasta bien entrada la época moderna se constata la existencia de dos ensenadas en torno al extremo de la lengua de terreno sobre la que se asienta Almuñécar (HOFFMAN, 1988: p. 65). Será entonces cuando se asista a una aceleración del proceso de sedimentación en estas áreas, como consecuencia directa de una progresiva pérdida de la masa vegetal del interior montañoso.
