Con este volumen la serie Hispania Antiqua Alcanza el número cuatro de los cinco previstos en el proyecto inicial, habiendo sido precedido de los correspondientes a la Hispania paleocristiana y visigoda (1978; 2º edición actualizada en preparación), a la Hispania romana (1993) y a la Hispania musulmana de los siglos VIII al XII (1997). La calidad material está a la altura de los volúmenes aparecidos, con excelentes fotografías en b/n y color, destacando las reproducciones de las pinturas murales y las miniaturas de los códices leoneses y castellanos de los siglos X y XI. Por iniciativa de los autores, se ha renunciado en buena parte al gran formato de las imágenes en favor de una mayor cantidad de ilustraciones, con lo que el libro se separa ligeramente de la línea dominante hasta el momento, a saber, selección de los temas y despliegue de la reproducción, inclinándose hacia un enfoque de catálogo ampliamente representativo, de enorme valor documental.
