The word villa starts to disappear in texts coming from the Visigothic kingdom in the fifth century being substituted by villula, possibly revealing not only a reduction in size and importance of these rural centres, but showing the decline of this social and eco- nomic enterprise. Meanwhile after some evolution the different meaning of castellum and castrum coincide indicating a fortified habitat. Villa is finally used, above all in texts not very influenced by tradition, with the meaning of small rural centre.
