Abstract

The paper argues against the idea of the Visigothic laws on fugitives expressing the continuity of classical slavery and besides a kind of final chaos at the end of the kingdom. Studiyng the different laws and their changes chronologically arises the picture of a State anxious to defend its traditional role in which its own local powers are not interested. The evolution of the legal dispositions shows the abandonment of the rural areas by the rich landowners at the end of the seventh century. Complexity in the meaning of who these fugitives were is also stressed.
