Except for some hardly systematic mediaeval texts and for Anton Van den Wyngaerde’s 1567 drawing, all the available knowledge concerning the walls of Jaén was, until very recently, based on a number of descriptions of their ground plan and of some gates andtowers. These descriptions date back to the period between the late 13th century and the late 19th century (J. Martínez de Mazas1794; P. Madoz 1845-50; Fº. Pi i Margall 1885).
