CASTALLA CASTLE (ALICANTE, SPAIN): NEW CONTRIBUTIONS ON FAUNA AND VEGETAL LANDSCAPE USES (11th-15th CENTURIES)

The Castalla Castle Heritage Site Social Regeneration Project was carried out between 2009 and 2017 (Alicante, Spain). One of its fundamental lines of work was the study of unknown archaeological materials, such as those of fauna, malacofauna, timber and charcoal with the aim of continuing to rebuild the palaeoenvironment of the castle between the 11th and 15th centuries.
The 432 taxons studied come from the Andalusian (11th century-1244) and Christian (14th and 15th centuries) levels documented in 1998 and 1999. Three taxons correspond to the marine malacofauna –one valve of Glycymeris sp. and two specimens of Charonia lampas–. The rest –Iberus gualtierianus alonensis, Otala punctata, Cornu aspersum, Sphincterochila candidissima, Theba pisana, Pseudotachea splendida and Cernuella virgata– are terrestrial gastropods. These species have a certain size and are edible. Therefore, it seems that they were collected for food purposes.
