We intend to explore the relationship between the monumental iconicised doors of the 'Alā' al-Dīn Mosque and the Karatay Madrasa and the outer doorway of the caravanserai at Sultanhanı, all of which are located in central Anatolia. Furthermore, in order to provide a broader context to the above vision, we will add the analysis of the other doorway of the caravanserai of Sultanhanı and the main doorway of the 'Alā' al-Dīn mosque in Niğde. To this end, our contribution will be approached from several perspectives, emphasising a new reading and translation of the epigraphy of the aforementioned doors, as well as a thorough archaeological reading of the outer doorway of the caravanserai of Sultanhanı. The latter will allow us to offer a recreation of appearance of this entrance when the building was founded in 1229, very different from the reconstruction of 1278. All graphic material presented is innovative, rigorous, and highly enlightening.
