Abstract

The present research delves into the treatment that lexicon can have in the area of Spanish for Specific Purposes (SSP, hereafter). Lexical teaching is a vitally important area in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. This discipline is characterized by a certain divergence that separates, among other issues, the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language from a generalist perspective as opposed to a perspective oriented towards teaching the language for specific purposes.

This article aims to provide the reader with some key guidelines for making decisions regarding the lexical terminology to encounter in the development and design of a learning situation. To do this, we will analyze the essential factors that emerge from reference documents such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, hereafter), along with its complementary volume.

The question that arises in this area of lexical teaching for specific purposes is aimed at determining two essential issues. The first one is related to the criteria to be used to determine a lexical selection, which must be correlated with the thematic issue of the unit. The second question to consider for the teaching of Spanish for specific purposes is related to the development of a template that allows for the creation of terminology framed within a lexical field. In other words, lexical teaching for specific purposes focuses on two essential aspects: a) Criteria for lexical selection: The selection must be correlated with the theme of the unit. b) Template for terminology development: The template must allow for the creation of terminology framed within a lexical field.

The importance of this research lies in offering a line of materials creation based on lexical development in the field of teaching Spanish for specific purposes. This objective is based on establishing themes related to the business world so that, based on these themes, a guide for creating lexical units can be established to enrich the different competencies that a given target audience must develop. In addition to the parameters offered by the CEFR through descriptive categories and the external context of use, this study aims to offer other parameters and complementary criteria such as encounters, frequency, profitability, and productivity.

  • Emilio Iriarte Romero, University of Granada

    PhD in Hispanic Philology with specialization in EFE. Double degree in Hispanic Philology and English Philology (University of Granada). He is a professor at the University of Granada (Dept. of Teaching of Language and Literature) and has been a professor at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University of Granada for 22 years. He has taught modules in several masters on EFE teaching. He has taught ELE/ENE in Ireland, Sweden and Spain (UIMP, UNIR, UGR). Expert Degree in the Teaching of Business Spanish from the Complutense University of Madrid. He has been a member of the Scientific Committee of GERES (Grupo de Estudio e Investigación de las lenguas de especialidad). He is co-author of the manuals Empresa Siglo XXI and Cultura y negocios.
