Abstract

Maritime piracy is one of the major causes that affect safety at sea, especially in sensitive areas such as the Gulf of Aden. However, this issue is not a priority for States as it is proven by the criminalization by Spain of the offense of piracy by its Criminal Code that was reformed in 2010 after the difficulties faced concerning the jurisdiction of the Spanish courts in the Alakrana case.
