Resumen

En 1604, Jacobo VI de Escocia, recién coronado como Jacobo I de Inglaterra, lanzó un gran proyecto: la unión política y jurídica de sus dos reinos. Para llevar a cabo este proyecto, utilizó un laborioso proceso: dos comisiones -una inglesa y otra escocesa- prepararon un "proyecto de ley de la Unión", que se debatió ante dos parlamentos -inglés y escocés-. El resultado, en ambos reinos, fue un fracaso casi total si se excluyen algunas correcciones de rigor debidas a la Unión personal, especialmente en las Borders. Este artículo examina las causas de este revés, entre los "tractos de unión", las tensas relaciones entre Jaime y el Parlamento inglés, los obstáculos técnicos y los prejuicios nacionales.
