This article presents a preliminary outline of the research that the authors have carried out on the social representations of water distributors in Mexico at the beginning of the 20th century. The work is based on the images of male and female water carriers appearing in postcards of this period. We analyze this printed corpus from a gender perspective (that emphasizes the cultural and social construction of differences ascribed to masculinity and femininity) and the current focus on creating typologies of “Mexican types,” which encompasses a large number of images of the various occupations and quotidian lifestyle of the indigenous and mestizo world in Mexican cities during this period.
