Approache to the Metaphorical Senses of grande and pequeño

The aim of this article is to analyze the semantic values that are usually associated with the Spanish adjectives grande and pequeño beyond their purely dimensional senses (linked, in principle, with the size of the entities of the physical world). In the part dedicated to the lexicographic proposal, these semantic values will be separated and grouped in such a way that, once ordered and defined, they will be shown as possible meanings of a dictionary. Throughout this article, the focus will be on showing the polysemic character of the concerning words and on explaining the cognitive processes that underlie the development of the metaphorical or metonymical senses to which they are usually related. The lexicographical decisions made later on will be related to this first semantic analysis; the aim is to provide coherence to the proposal and to justify, as far as possible, the steps taken in the elaboration of the entries for the words grande and pequeño.
