Thermalism and territory through time. A window open to the role of thermal heritage from Roman times to the present day

Dra. Silvia González Soutelo (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)
Rationale
Thermalism is an intrinsic part of many territories, both in the peninsular geography and in other European and Latin American areas. It is a natural resource that, although it has always been considered historically valuable for the health-giving qualities of its waters, the social, economic and strategic role that thermal establishments have played in the territory throughout history has rarely been addressed from an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective. However, it constitutes a line of work that is emerging and that combines interest in the water resource, historical heritage and the broader sense of territoriality that connects the population and the socioeconomic sphere with thermal spaces. All of this makes these studies show a strong multidisciplinary character, with the aim of learning from the past so that the value of thermal waters is recognized as places of healing, encounter, cultural and social exchange, as well as for their indisputable importance in the territory
This call for papers hopes to gather contributions that analyze the origin and development of this phenomenon, through different study tools and perspectives that allow us to understand the significance and importance of mineral-medicinal springs for the configuration of the territory, at different times and in different contexts. To this end, the reception of articles from different perspectives is open, which aim to configure an approach on which to face the challenges and opportunities faced by thermal towns and areas endowed with an exceptional resource that must be a driving force for development and the future.
