This paper analyzes the water supply distribution challenges faced by San Andrés Chalchicomula, a rural zone that belonged to the ancient province of Tepeaca during the Spanish colonial period. After surveying the geographic dimensions of this community, the work takes up the process by which water rights were granted and administered. The participation of the “república de naturales” (protected native communities) in the control of water installations utilized to channel the valuable liquid is also analyzed.
The main objective of this work is to reveal the water distribution system used in present-day Chalchicomula of Sesma. The main body of the research was carried out in the Archivo General de la Nación de México and the Archivo General de Notarias del Estado de Puebla.
