This paper analyzes the tensions and disputes arising from the use of the water resources of the Azuer river between 1596 and 1616, the period of rule of the Encomienda de Manzanares (the current province of Ciudad Real, Spain), one of the most thriving areas of the Campo de Calatrava, by Gómez Dávila y Toledo, knight of the Order of Calatrava and 2nd Marquis of Velada. The sources consulted are derived almost entirely from the Archivo Histórico Nacional (Madrid) and use is also made of documents from the Archivo General de Simancas (Valladolid), the Real Chancillería of Granada and information provided by the Relaciones Topográficas. This study demonstrates the importance that the Calatrava authorities attributed to water as a prime resource for the economy of the region, situated in an influential area of the Alto Guadiana river.Downloads
