A vueltas con el brindis de los curacas: un cuentecillo tradicional en la narrativa peruana / Struggling with «the curacas’ toast»: a traditional folktale in the Peruvian narrative

This article explores the traditional folktale that I call «the curacas’ toast». First, I propose its probable origin, as part of an anecdote from the Spanish medieval history, still alive in the ballads. Inca Garcilaso was the first author to adapt and transform the folktale, incorporating it to the Peruvian literature. Secondly, I trace and analyze the transformation of this folktale throughout different periods of Peruvian literature, starting with a colonial author, such as the mestizo chronicler Inca Garcilaso, the nineteenth century writer Ricardo Palma and then the indigenist writer Enrique López Albújar in the twentieth century.Downloads
