Birthday songs and rites in Europe
Keywords:
Birthday, ritual, syncretism, song, passageAbstract
I shall examine in this paper one of the most widespread celebrations nowadays: birth-days. We will approach it from the fields of anthropology and folk studies, since it is a ritual which may provide us with valuable information regarding syncretism. I shall address birthday celebrations origins, its nature as a rite of passage and the significance of birthday song lyrics, including elements such as invitations, guests and gift-giving.
