The singularity of animals in the popular lyrics of Mexico: the pre-Hispanic contribution

Abstract

Starting from the premise that animals that appear in popular Mexican couplets have certain distinctive features compared to other Latin American traditional lyrics, in these lines a comparative approach is made between the lyrical tradition of the ancient Mexican poets and the of our current popular verses, in order to find out how pertinent it is to think that some symbolic representations of animals in pre-Hispanic thought could have penetrated into the Hispanic verses, granting, over the years, part of the personality that various animals display today in traditional Mexican couplets.

Author Biography

  • Rosa Virginia Sánchez García, National Center for Musical Research, Documentation and Information (Cenidim) of INBAL.

    She studied ethnomusicology at the UNAM Faculty of Music; She studied Ethnology at the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH) and has a degree in Music with a focus on Pedagogy from the Morelense Center for the Arts.

     

    As a musical performer, she was a member of various musical groups dedicated to the interpretation and dissemination of Mexican popular music, like “Tlalli”, “Surco” and “Tepoztlán”. Likewise, he made presentations in cities abroad, such as Barcelona and Jerez de la Frontera, in Spain; Buenos Aires and Córdoba, in Argentina; City of Nagoya, in Japan, and Washington, in the USA.

     

    Since 1985 she has been a researcher in Ethnomusicology area at the National Center for Musical Research, Documentation and Information (Cenidim) of INBAL. Her interest has focused on the music of the Huasteca, and popular lyrics. Her main product is her book: Antología poética del son huasteco traditional (2009). She is currently carrying out a project on popular songs in Mexican cinema from the golden age.

     

    She has published numerous articles in specialized magazines such as Pauta, Heterofonía, Revista de Literaturas Populares, and Acta Poética.

     

    Since 2005, She has taught Musical Research classes and musicological subjects on Mexican popular music, as well as regional music workshops and ensembles in the Music degree at the Morelense Center for the Arts (CMA).

     

    During the period 2003-2020, she was part of the Editorial Committee of the Revista de Literaturas Populares, directed by Dr. Margit Frenk, from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (FFyL) of the UNAM.

     

    In 2001, INBAL awarded her the Award for Academic Performance in Research, 3rd place.
