The participation of the family in the school and social development of adolescents with visual disabilities: group therapeutic approach

The objective of this research was to know the implications of therapeutic groups with relatives of adolescents with visual impairment in the school and social development of adolescents. It was used the qualitative longitudinal method. Family members of adolescents with visual disabilities attended in a university rehabilitation service participated in the research. An initial open interview, therapeutic groups with relatives and final open interview were also carried out. The records were made through audio, video and field diary. Content analysis was performed. Three categories of analysis were defined: 1) Feelings and expectations of those in relation to adolescents with visual disabilities; 2) Recognizing barriers, accessibility and use of Assistive Technology in the visual area; 3) Evaluating experiences in therapeutic groups of relatives. The research allowed to deepen the knowledge about the family's participation in the school and social development of adolescents with visual disabilities through the group approach. In addition, it allowed the intervention together with the family to welcome their anguish and feelings, clarifying doubts, informing and promoting knowledge about strategies that favor the school performance of adolescents with visual disabilities and strengthen the search for their rights.
