  • Articles may be submitted to any section of the journal. To begin with, the length of the text and the documents accompanying it are unrestricted. However, following reports from the Editorial Production Team, the Editorial Board may propose certain limits or reductions in specific cases.
  • The official languages of the magazine are Spanish and English, although texts in French, Italian and Portuguese can also be accepted, as well as essays in other languages from the Spanish state in exceptional cases.
  • The magazine policy will essentially be guided by the ethical compromise with the scientific investigation.
  • Aceptance: All originals are reviewed by the Editorial Committee, who reserves the right to return originals that do not come with the scope of the journal or do not comply with the rules for publication. The texts that passed this first analysis be submitted for external and anonymous peer review by well-known specialists in the subject. Contributions and suggestions will be sent back to the authors, so they can take them into account for the final version. The article will be reviewed for a second time if needed. Authors that do not agree with these corrections and suggestions, they must justify it properly or are free to withdraw their originals.

Section policies

It is structured around fixed sections dedicated to research, book reviews, miscellanea and in memoriam. These last pieces may be commissioned by any of the administrators of the journal. Occasionally monographic sections will be included.

Research

The magazine is focused on research of medieval archaeology, including: a) pieces of basic research from excavations, prospections, analysis, etc.; b) interpretative studies; c) studies of synthesis.

The papers will be originals and unpublished, distinguishing the data and original theories from those already published by the corresponding citations. The authors will adapt to the rules of the ethical compromise of the magazine and will accept subjecting their work to a process of anonymous peer review. Articles can be removed from the evaluation process by any author who disagrees with the decisions or for any other reasons.

Monographic

Authors or scientific entities can propose the publication of various texts related among them by its topic (prepared by different authors), minutes of relevant seminars, etc. that may result scientifically interesting for its joint publication. The publication shall be approved by the journal´s board of direction or by a member of the editorial commission, but in any case, the texts will have to comply with the journal´s quality conditions and submit individually to the journal´s evaluation system.

Book reviews

Any researcher can submit reviews of books that they consider of interest. The publication of these reviews will be subject to evaluation according to the quality criteria. The editorial board will be in charge of these evaluations. The reviews will have a heading with the following information: title of the book in capital letters; name and surname of the author or authors or in the case of collective authorship the name of the editors or coordinator; place of publication, publisher, date of publication and number of pages. The name and the institution of the person reviewing will be at the end of the text. Miscellanea

This section will include information about findings; conferences, news of interest, etc. They will be selected for publication by the editorial office. In Memoriam

This section includes recensions and profiles about deceased specialists in medieval archaeology. A text with a maximum of 3500 characters will be considered a recension. If the text exceeds this number of characters it will be considered a profile and it can be subject to evaluation by peers, especially if it analyzes overall scientific activity and present ideological or interpretative opinions.

Peer review process

Reception, evaluation and approval.

  1. The Editorial Production Team will review the wording to verify that the publishing rules have been followed. If they are not met, the texts are returned to the authors so they can redo them.
  2. The Editorial Production Team will send the received text to the members of Editorial Board who can submit their own evaluation of the text, including a recommendation of non-acceptance. If these negative reports represented at least 50% of the members of the Editorial Board that have issued their opinion the article will be considered rejected and it will be communicated to the author. Otherwise, the topic will be considered suitable for the magazine pending the consideration of the external reviewers. The reports issued by the members of the editorial board can be attached to the file and sent to the author so their observations can be taken into consideration, maintaining the anonymity of the authors.
  3. The members of the Editorial Board will suggest the names of the reviewers taking into account the content of the text and the reviewers knowledge of it.
  4. Among the proposed reviewers the Editorial Production Team will appoint at least two, taking into consideration objective criteria: the concurrence of the Editorial Board members in suggested reviewers, geographical distance from the persons to be evaluated, that the proposed reviewer has not participated in recent reviews for the magazine, etc. As well as the knowledge of the possible existence of personal conflicts.
  5. The Editorial Production Team will send the text to the specialist for its scientific revision. Peer reviewers are sent a model form to standardise review parameters as far as possible. They will judge the convenience of its publication and if necessary, will give their recommendations and indications for the text to be clarified or improved. The “double blind rule” will be followed, therefore the reviewers will not be informed of the name of the author and the author will not be informed of who is reviewing the text. The Redaction Committee will delete as best as it can all information which may leave the author and reviewers open to identification. The review will recommend a) approval the text without revisions; b) approval it with minor revisions; c) approve it with major and significant revisions; d) reject the publication.
  6. In case of insuperable discrepancies between both reviewers, the Editorial Production Team will be allowed to ask for a new analysis to another of the proposed reviewers. This person will not be informed about the circumstances.
  7. If all the reports are positive, or all negative, acceptance or rejection of the paper for publication will be communicated to the author, justifying in the latter case the reasons for the rejection.
  8. In cases b and c, the author will be instructed to make changes. The Editorial Production Team will send to the author either the reviewers’ reports, deleting the data that could identify them, or the information contained in the evaluations, especially the parts referred to the recommendations to improve the text. The publication of the paper in this case can be subordinated to the implementation of the changes in the original text according to the indications of the reviewers. In the b) case, once the author has submitted the corrections, it will be the Editorial Production Team who will check that the changes have been implemented. In case c), the text will be sent to the reviewers once again to ensure that the changes have been made, or for judgment of the authors reasons for not taking the reviewers’ comments into consideration. The reviewer will submit a new report.
  9. Once the work has been approved, the Editorial Production Team will inform the author. They will also be able to make a technical evaluation communicating the deficiencies which must be amended before continuing with the edition process.
  10. The magazine will update the roster of reviewers every three years with the ones that have taken part in the evaluation of the received text in the past five years.

Publication frequency

Arqueología y Territorio Medieval is an annual publication which is published in the last trimester of the year. The received articles will be published in the order of arrival once the edition process has been completed.
