Cultural heritage of hydraulic infrastructure in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico

This work presents the main characteristics of the hydraulic infrastructure, such as dams, which form a significant part of the Cultural Heritage of The Highlands region in the state of Jalisco. This infrastructure is essential for the current socio-economic growth and development of this strategic area of the country. The study cross-references official information with fieldwork. The hydrographic basins of the Verde, San Juan, and San Miguel rivers are identified, along with more than a hundred dams. Most of these dams have storage capacities at the Normal Maximum Water Level (NAMO) of less than one cubic hectometer (hm³), while some exceed 80 hm³ at NAMO. The stored water is used for irrigation and public supply. Currently, the development project of the El Zapotillo Dam and its interconnection with the El Salto- Calderón Dam supply network stands out, aiming to supply water to the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
