Can water change social and cultural structures and identities? L’estany d’Ivars (Lleida)

L’Estany d’Ivars (Pla d’Urgell region, in the province of Lleida) was recovered for the residents and the population in general after being drained in 1951. The pond modified the ecosystem, the landscape, the fauna, the flora and also the identity of the neighbors. Pla d’Urgell went from having no tourism (before the recovery of the pond) to being a tourist attraction due to its special and unique landscape. The water transformed the region. Information obtained through participant observation is presented and 10 interviews have been carried out with technicians responsible for the Consorci de l’Estany, neighbors and visitors. According to the information provided by those interviewed, the pond changed the identity of the residents of the nearby towns and they have acquired a more positive and empowered identity; They feel more proud and satisfied with their place of residence.
