A grande pressão demográfica e um clima de características semi-áridas reduzem a disponibilidade de água no sul da Califórnia. Várias transferências foram feitas com o objetivo de fornecer água para a aglomeração urbana de Los Angeles. Recentemente, novas técnicas de dessalinização e reciclagem de águas residuais são levadas em consideração. O artigo faz um tour histórico do abastecimento de água para esta região e apresenta um resumo da situação atual
