Gender equality
The Grove aligns with gender and non-sexist initiatives that aim for gender equality in society. To fulfill this commitment, the journal has implemented some strategies, including editorial involvement, inclusive language, and a focus on sex and gender in research studies. We strongly encourage authors to use gender-neutral terms rather than masculine ones to refer to classes or groups of individuals, and, in the case of unknown gender, to use the pronoun “they” instead of gender-specific pronouns. Authors should be explicit if the research specifically deals with one gender or if there are gender differences, and avoid the perpetuation of stereotypes.
Authors can find a set of guidelines for non-sexist and gender-equal language in the Toolkit on Gender-sensitive communication volume.
