Abstract

Drawing upon multi-sited ethnographic research focusing on practices occurring in a rock climbing area, this paper aims to contribute to the understanding of how space is constructed
into a place. The construction and appropriation of the spacesof practice in the ‘lifestyle sports’ setting are narrowly embedded in global connections through which circulate symbols and meanings, but also values and statues. In this context, these referents and cultural configurations are territorialized by participants. Through description and analysis of these cultural forms and their circulation, which bridge individual actions and media production in a specific place, this paper emphasizes how rock climbers construct, develop, appropriate, andsustain rock climbing areas.
