Abstract

Ancestral rhythms and melodies resonate every Christmas at the main square of the little village of Agost (Alicante). Flutes and drums recall ancient rites of passage already forgotten
in many other communities. Through this example of comparative ethnography contrasting similar cross-cultural cases, the author of the essay puts the focus on the great value of such rites of passage. In fact, a central key role is being performed by many of these rites, although they apparently seem just masked in folkloric festivities. However, very important issues such
as personal identity development, acceptance of our social roles and the crossing of thresholds throughout different life stages are being put at stake.
