Myth, experience, and practice: Relationality and recursivity in the anthropological study of ritual
Abstract
This article analyzes the concepts of experience, social practice, and mythology in the anthropological context of ritual. Though theoretical approaches about ritual tend to be
fragmentary, skewed, contradictory, and many times incompatible with each other, the main objective of this text is to show that there are points of juncture among the different
approaches. Therefore, the article describes the mechanisms that make possible to talk about relational and recursive processes within the analytical perspectives on ritual, by privileging the subjective and transformative experiences of individuals as well as the social performative practices, and their implicit mythological narratives. In this way, I propose to see ritual as a total fact in itself, capable of being understood in its own right without necessarily invoking an external sociological explanation in its configuration.
