Abstract

The American anthropologist Hymes developed a model of contextual analysis of linguistic interaction called SPEAKING, which highlights the importance of communication and
interpreting language components in the natural context in which they were issued. Building on this framework, the present essay analyzes the messages written on banners, posters and spontaneous street graffiti during the mass mobilization of 15 M (15 May 2011), which took place in Madrid at the Puerta del Sol and its vicinities. It is clear that such mobilizations and the array of messages displayed throughout the centre of the city cannot be understood in
isolation, that is, without taking into account the influence of so-called ‘Arab spring’ and the Greek protests. Also featured in this contextual analysis are specific local factors, such as
political opportunity in the months prior to the municipal elections.
