Abstract

This paper examines the symbolism around oogenesis mythical stories recorded in Mesoamerica and the Andes. The analysis reviews the comparative approaches in the study of American
mythologies from a holistic perspective, and concludes by identifying the similarities and differences between the mythic corpus of the two major cultural areas. The symbolic motif
of oogenesis is considered as an essential element of specific world views, confronting the reductionist interpretations studying isolated symbols of their earthly foundations.
