Sumak Kawsay policies. Differences with Neoliberalism and the Welfare State, Challenges in the Global Scenario

Abstract

This paper discusses the concept of sumak kawsay (good living) as a backbone philosophy since 2008 for the public policies of the Republic of Ecuador. The paper describes sumak kawsay as a set of rights and policies different from neoliberalism and Western Welfare State. It also analyzes how the discourse of the sumak kawsay is however entangled with pieces of neoliberal and welfarist governmentalities, and what are the challenges but also the vulnerabilities that it faces today on the global scenario. In this way, doing so, this paper presents and dialogues with the early work coming out of the team led the author within the
International Research Program “Democracies in Revolution & Revolutions in Democracy”.
