Abstract

This article is about the theme of ethnofiction and its importance in the creation of an imaginary anthropological alterity. Ethnofiction is a narrative genre that is considered as false or from a dubious origin, and which mixes up aspects of reality with mysticism. From the proliferation of works of this genre I analyze mainly the writings of two authors: Carlos Castaneda, and Jacobo Grinberg-Zylberbaum. The objective is to show how the narrative of ethnofiction builds up imaginary alterities that will help in the creation of diverse contemporary spiritual movements. In this sense, I describe the influence that the genre of ethnofiction has had in the rise of neo-chamanism as a ritual practice based on individual and collective experiences of non-ordinary reality. The article concludes with a reflection of the concept of New Traditions
and its importance for anthropology
