Abstract

The Festival de la Balsa Manteña is a celebration of cultural identity in the coastal Ecuadorian community of Salango. The festival began in 1992, the same year that signified 500 years
of indigenous resistance, and represents a response to the celebration of the Dia de la Raza and the dominant discourse of mestizaje. In this I article I consider the Festival de la Balsa Manteña as more than a popular festival that celebrates heritage cultural. The festival represents statements about the hegemonic nature of the discourse of mestizaje by creating a space for the expression of internalized notions of collective identity that are not normally expressed due to pervasiveness of the dominant ideology of mestizaje. The case analyzed in this essay illustrates how communal ceremonial performances provide a space for general concepts
and/or notions of identity to be packaged into concrete expressions of self-representation at specific historical moments
