Abstract

Derived from anthropological research on paid work and construction of masculinity, this article explores how neoliberal policies have led to layoffs in the maquiladora industries set up in a Mexican city located northeast of the country and, simultaneously, have redefined men’s masculine identities who were working as laborers in sweatshops and, today, are unemployed.
