Abstract

Fiesta Mayor of Gracia is a popular celebration of more than 100 years that it is celebrated in Gracia, one of the ten districts of Barcelona city. In this article we consider that as popular festivities are a historical and social product we can account of social change process that happened in the urban occidental societies. Tradition and modernity are two basic theoretical concepts to understand this change process. In general these concepts seem two different and exclusive categories but in this article we consider that both are complementary and they need each other to exist in the social reality. From this theoretical reflection, we asked how the participants in the organization of the Fiesta Mayor of Gracia, signified these notions, tradition and modernity, and how did they express in their festivity practices.
In accordance whit that, we present a discourse analysis of both notions: their meanings, their symbolic tensions and the social practices that have been produced.
