Abstract

The text is organized in three parts; the first one deals with the sources in their historical context, three documents to be found in the library archives of the Cathedral in Badajoz (Spain) written by three “non-official” chroniclers from the end of the 18th century. The information from these documents about religiousness and social rites in the city is currently of great ethnological value. The second part mainly deals with sorrow rites and public supplications (16th-17th centuries). From starting the analysis of handwritten and printed documents, we have drawn up different tables on supplications and described the different kinds. Finally, we make a careful anthropological research of such social events and collective rites of sorrow and thanksgiving services in a period which coincides with the decline of the stratified society.
