Abstract

The Navy is a ‘Fierce Institution’, but it can be more acurately described as a ‘Total Institution’ under some circumstances such as long voyages or at the schools where new members are trained and start to socialize. Nowadays, the Navy is faced with an important challenge: the coherent assimilation of the radical change brought about by the professionalization process. In this article, we analyse the main legitimate means
the Institution has in order to get one of its more important objectives: a high level of motivation and implication of those involved in the institutional body. There are many of those underlying values on which the institutional ethics is based behind this intricate system of reward and punishment. This institutional ethics shows an ideal to which the behaviour and principles of those who play a part of the Institution must be closed.
