Costa Rica is one of the nature tourism favorite destinations within America Latina and the world. The current article is a reflection on the importance of protected areas, especially its national parks, in the country´s representation both external and internal, where plays a role in the conformation of the national identity. The objective pursued by this text is twofold: on the one hand, to investigate what are the institutional uses of the nature´s heritage process in relation to the construction of a national identity, modern, green, middle class, white, democratic and peaceful that differentiates them from other countries in the region. On the other hand, it seeks to contribute to the critique of the neoliberal drift experienced by the sustainable development model and its impact on the commoditization of nature.
