Progress in outer space as an excuse to impose the human condition

In November 1961 the United States launched the Mercury-Atlas 5 with the intention of achieving its first orbital flight, a milestone that had already been achieved by the Soviet Union twice. His passenger was Enos, a five-year-old chimpanzee who did not weigh more than 20 kilos. The reliable results shown by Enos in the training were not enough for the mission team to trust his actions in the mission, so they decided to install a device in the capsule of the Mercury-Atlas 5 to deliver electric shocks to the hominid if he made a mistake. An incident in the system when the capsule took off caused Enos to receive electric shocks even when he was performing his tasks correctly. Throughout two orbits, the chimpanzee received more than 76 shocks to the soles of its feet, and despite the torment he continued to perform each action correctly with extraordinary diligence.
