Abstract

This article attempts to establish a first approach to productions shooting in Japan and China during the nineteenth century. The analysis of the cultural logic underlying those photographs
to understand some of these key visuals. The main characteristic of the colonial ideology imposed by the dominant Western patterns found in photography a tremendously effective
means of expression. The ultimate goal of this paper is precisely to reveal these principles through comparative analysis of Chinese and Japanese pictures of the time.
