Learning through laughter: the role of memes in Applied Economics subjects

Resumen

The transmission of knowledge through images has gained importance in recent years with the rise of social networks. Recently, images and memes have begun to be incorporated into teaching, allowing traditional classes to be reinforced through modern and fun activities. This paper adds evidence on this novel educational method, describing an assessment activity using memes in Applied Economics subjects, specifically in International Economics for Business and Spanish Economy, in different degree programs at the Complutense University of Madrid. The activity was analysed through two questionnaires that students completed, reflecting their perceptions both before and after its implementation. Based on their answers, the memes produced, and the grades obtained, various findings are found. The results show that the activity was innovative and aroused students' interest in the subject. It represented an accessible and entertaining way of learning, which generated satisfaction among the students. Moreover, their commitment and effort were reflected in the quality of the memes produced.

  • Claudia García-García, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, España

    Assistant Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, Department of Applied Economics, Structure and History. She obtained her PhD in 2020 with an International Mention in Advanced Quantitative Techniques in the Economic and Business Field from the University of Granada. Prior to this, she completed her Degree in Economics (2015) and a Master’s in Quantitative Techniques in Business Management (2016). In January 2021, she obtained the three accreditations of the PEP Programme from ANECA: Profesora Contratada Doctora (PCD), Profesora Ayudante Doctora (PAD), and Profesora de Universidad Privada (PUP). She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Piraeus (Greece) and the National University of Costa Rica, the latter funded by the CatChain Project under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Additionally, she has actively participated in various research initiatives, including R&D&I projects funded through the Andalusia ERDF Operational Programme, and teaching projects, such as the UCM innovation projects (INNOVA-Docencia). Her primary research interests span several areas of Economics, from econometric techniques to environmental sustainability. She has authored 15 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including 4 high-impact (Q1) papers. Of these, two focus on methodological issues related to multicollinearity, while the other two address topics in sustainability.   • Sara Fernández, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, España

    Associate professor at the Complutense University of Madrid in the Department of Applied Economics, Structure and History, and PhD in Economics and Business since 2018 by the University of Castilla La Mancha. She has a Master's Degree in International Economics and Labour Relations from the University of Castilla La Mancha (2014). Her main lines of research cover different areas of innovation economics such as open innovation and eco-innovation. She has authored several articles and book chapters. His curriculum includes a wide variety of publications, highlighting works in scientific journals such as: Journal of the Knowledge Economy (2024), Structural Change and Economics Dynamics (2024), Energy Policy (2023), Journal of Cleaner Production (2022), Technological Forecasting and Social Change (2021), Regional Studies (2018), among others.She has also participated in several research projects of the National R&D Plan and the Ramón Areces Foundation. In addition, she has been a visiting scholar at the Universidade do Minho (Portugal) and at the National University of Costa Rica within the CatChain project - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

  • Celia Torrecillas Bautista, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, España

    Celia Torrecillas is Associate Professor of Economics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She has a Ph.D. in Social and Legal Sciences in the field of International Economics, from Universidad de Jaén (2014), and Master degree in Innovation Economics and Management, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2011). Her research interests include Multinational Enterprises from developing countries, Innovation and Eco-innovation, and the olive oil sector. With 10 years of postdoc, she has 21 publications in journals and books, including:  Journal of the Knowledge Economy, Structural Change and Economics Dynamics, Energy Policy, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Cleaner Production, the Journal of Technology Transfer, Science in Public Policy, and Technological Economic Development of Economy. She has participated in research projects funded by Spanish public administrations.  She has been a visiting scholar at the Trinity College in Dublin (Ireland), Lineaus University in Kalmar (Sweeden) and University of Regensburg (Germany).
