WAGE DISPERSION IN TECHNOLOGY & KNOWLEDGE INTENSIVE SECTOR DURING THE GREAT RECESSION
Abstract
ABSTRACT
In this paper, we analyze the effects of the current Great Recession on wage dispersion in technology and knowledge intensive sectors in Spain. We use administrative data from the Continuous Sample of Working Lives (database designed by the Spanish Social Security) in 2007 and 2011 versions. Our results suggest that the degree of earnings inequality in such sectors has increased during the economic crisis, especially among the lower deciles with respect to the higher and intermediate ones. The same behavior has occurred for the Spanish economy as a whole, thus presenting a countercyclical behavior. Furthermore, there have been changes in wage inequality between- and within-groups. On the one hand, the between-groups wage dispersion diminishes by gender, skills and educational level, while it increases by seniority, contract type and activities sector. On the other hand, the within-group wage dispersion increases for people with the greatest difficulties in finding work like younger people and low-skilled and low-tenured workers.
